Television – Sodom and Gomorrah?!

 Hey everybody!

I would say that there is a limit to everything, but this assumption is obviously not true at all. What’s up in the media scene?! Do you think that formats like ”Dschungel-Camp” cross the border?

Yesterday evening I tried to detract from learning and finally found myself glued to the TV. There was a show that really caught my interest, it was called ”Die Wahrheit und nichts als die Wahrheit”. Here people get money (at least € 25000) for answering private and also very intimate questions while being connected to a lie detector. If they lie, they get nothing. The woman who sat on the ”hot chair” yesterday was asked if she wished to have sex with two men…. simultaneously. Or if she had ever been unfaithful to her boyfriend. Do you think that those kind of questions should be asked in a TV show? I am really interested in you opinion about such formats. Do you think that there are some things that should better stay private?

Cosmetic surgery – ethnically correct?!

The field of cosmetic surgery is booming, but why?! To look god becomes more and more important. Thousands of people, male and female, already underwent those surgeries in the name of beauty and there is an upward tendency.  Attractiveness is often put on the same level with success. It is seen as a key used to enter the world’s executive floors or maybe as the basis for a perfect, working partnership. To summarize it: To be beautiful means to be successful…

What do you think about this statement? Do attractive people have less problems in life or do they enjoy any advantages? Which role does beauty ideals play in society and in how far are they related to the numbers of plastic surgeries? Do those operations make people lucky? I am really interested in your opinions about this issue.

What comes after University???

Dear Communication II class,

I was asking myself few days ago what I am going to do after I am done with my B.A.??? I am still kind of undecided if I should do my Master Degree – if I should do my Master in Germany – or if I should start working??? And if yes, in what kind of business should I work, since there are plenty of interesting jobs. If I could I would like to do all of them;)

I would like to know your plans for the future. Do all of you intend to do the Master Degree? Or do you plan to start working? If you plan to work, what kind of sector/business would you like to work at?

side jobs

Hello everybody!

In the age of tuition fees and horrendous semester fees most students have side jobs. So do I..   I  work for a chair at the Ruhruniversität and, from time to time, I work at the Ruhrstadion in Bochum, selling drinks and snacks.  Actually I am quite lucky that my parents support me financially. Otherwise I would probably have to do far more than that.

And if somebody has to work quite a lot to have money for purposes such as tuition fees, it is really hard to keep up with studying, isn’t it ?!

What do you think about side jobs? Do you have a side job or are you not able to work in addition to studying? How do you handle both working and studying?

Financial Crisis in the Catholic Church

Hello everybody!

Many dioceses of the Catholic Church in Germany are almost bankrupt. In the diocese of Essen the bishop is going to close 95 churches. There are also more than 100 educational institutions and kindergartens that are going to be closed down. Many parish communities are protesting, some people even leave church.

I wonder if this is the right strategy to improve the Catholic Church’s financial situation, in a time where most people do not show any interest in church?! What do you think about these problems? Do you think closing churches und Kindergartens will help in the long run? What else should the Catholic Church change in order to stop people from leaving church?

Do you know your pet?

When you take a look into our animal shelters you can see the disaster. Huge number of dogs, cats, rodents, birds or reptiles. Most of them are there because their former owners did not know what they did when buying the pet. When you want to get a dog which counts to a dangerous race you have to show your certificate of competence. But why can you buy  a hamster  or an iguana in a shop without this certificate. Most people know almost nothing about their pets.

Do you have a pet and have you really known almost everything about it BEFORE you got it?

Do you think this way of treating animals is right? I demand a certificate of competence for every kind of pet.

”Kopfnoten” – right or wrong?!

Since 2008 there can be found so called ”Kopfnoten” on every school report in North-Rhine Westphalia. Is it right or wrong to put pupils into categories or to evaluate their behaviour by means of marks? My question is: Why not?! In my opinion everybody is responsible for the own doings. An evaluation should not be threatening in a way or be a bad surprise at the end of the half-year, if a pupil behaves properly at school – this should be normal! I see the danger of wrong evaluations maybe based on preferences, but the general idea, in my opinion, is a good one. What do you think about ”Kopfnoten”? Can they ever be fair? In how far do they need to be improved?

”Tom Cruise is talking like Goebbels! Should he really portray Stauffenberg?”

”Should we clean the world?” That is what Tom Cruise asked his Scientology-friends not long ago delivering a speech about religion. I am of the opinion that such an utterance is intolerable and I am not alone with it. Also the ZDF historian Guido Knopp hardly criticized Tom Cruise and what he represents and even goes one step further by comparing the actor to Goebbels. He raised the question if Cruise really should portray Stauffenberg in the film ”Walküre”. Stauffenberg is the one who became famous for trying to assassinate Hitler in Juli 1944 and so is a very important figure in German history. What do you think about it? Is somebody like Tom Cruise the right man for the job?!

What do you think about boot camps?!

Hello everybody! At the moment there is a lot of trouble all around the establishment of boot camps in Germany. I’m very interested in what you are thinking about it, because I meanwhile heard a lot of controverse opinions about military education. On the one hand there are often given statements like ”What happened with the youth, in the past everything was better when youngsters knew how to show respect towards adults, boot camps are the right way to show them what is ment by respect”, but also other opinions exist that do negate a strong hand in education.

Both of my parents are elementary school teachers and I recently had a discussion with them about boot camps and why the government does not shrink from taking action in such a way. They tried to convince me of the idea that there has to be done more and that in most cases it would not be necessary to entrust a child in a drill instructor’s care if the parents prior had fulfilled their parental duties. In their opinion a child is mainly a product of its education, and to state that a child is ‘ineducable’ is just a possibility to give away responsibility. So what do you think about boot camps? Are they in a way a possibility to show young delinquents what hard life is about, or is it wrong to expose youngsters to such tortures?

New Year’s resolutions?!

Hello everybody!!

When I met with my friends yesterday we all talked about new year’s resolutions. Most of them would like to lose weight, others are going to quit smoking and some want to start playing sports… All in all I like such resolutions because in the beginning of the year people are motivated to improve their life situation. They use January, 1st, to make a clean cut and change at least parts of their lives. The sad thing is that these new resolutions do not last very long. As soon as people return to everyday life they lose the strong will they had during the holidays.

I would really like to know if you have any new year’s resolutions for 2008! What do you think about new year’s resolutions in general? Do you stick to those resolutions?
